After a breakfast of muesli (thank you Leslie) and granola we headed down to the boat to take some measurements. We decided we should replace the two lengths of hose we didn't think had been used. And a good call it was. But today was all about removal. I had the attitude of "let's just hack it out of there!" Dave was more prudent. We started by lining the under area with plastic to contain any "run off". Good call there. I'm not going to give you a ton of detail. Let's suffice to say - this was one crappy job. It stunk. It was visually disturbing. The "ewwwww" factor was off the charts. Good enough? But by 3:00 pm the Kraken had been exorcised. Old hoses are in the dumpster. The bilge has been mopped with a bleach solution and those pieces are in the dumpster. The "stuff" that was in the hoses went to the city water treatment dump station. The diaphragm pump has been rinsed, also at the city water treatment station. Multiple pairs of rubber gloves were used and disposed. It's gone.
Dave took a picture I won't post.
So tomorrow we start reassembling the new system. Already the boat smells better. I'm happy.
And sore.
So here's a bit of boater reality
This is the ramp to our dock at low tide.
That's Dave at the top.
So tides come and go every six hours. However today, every time we got to the ramp it looked just like this. Steep enough that you didn't want to use a dock cart because it could run away with you. And whenever we go up or down this ramp we are usually carrying at least 20 pounds of something. Simon weighs 22lbs. and we carry him because the ramp is tough on paws. I know, give me a little cheese with that whine.
We have a neighbor in the "RV park" today.
Cutest trailer ever.
After slaying the Kraken we felt we earned a TGIF Happy Hour at Anthony's. Which I have to tell you is awesome. They have a killer burger for $5. And a whole list of "six packs". We had the shrimp cocktails.
Six shot glass shrimp cocktails for $5. Yumm. We sat down and within a few minutes a guy sits down next to us and strikes up a conversation. He's signed on as crew on a Hans Christian 43' ketch.
The one with the black sail cover.
He's just waiting for the owner to get back with six gallons of varnish and they are headed out tonight. They are taking the inside passage to Sitka, AK. Then they will take the outside route down to San Francisco in time for the Americas Cup. Four and a half months. Then the owner plans to sail south to the Sea of Cortez, South America, cross to French Polynesia, and on and on and ..... This guy says he's committed for the four and a half months to San Francisco (he's from Tiburon[and Fran he has good teeth]). If things go well, he'll stay on. We always meet interesting folks at the bar at Anthony's. It's definitely an Art Trainor kind of place.
When we walked back to Booner, the resident of the cutest trailer was in
and had her awning out.
Turns out it came off a Volkswagen van.
She gave it to her daughter in Anacortes so she would have a place to stay when she comes to visit.
Good plan.
So we had another good day, but we're a tad sore and weary. It smells like Dave has gotten into the BenGay. The good news is we accomplished our goal of removing the nasty smelly pieces before the nice weekend people show up. We wouldn't want to make a bad impression. Our digs here in the marina rv park are very quiet and pleasant. We hear all manner of bird calls. But no airplanes, trains or bridges.
We're happy.

Thanks for the new man. He's close to Sausalito. Glad you remembered one of my criteria for a mate. So glad you got that yukky job done!
ReplyDeleteDo not know if I should laugh, cry, or get down on my knees and give thanks that it is not me who is trying to fix it! Thanks for the great writing.
ReplyDeleteHoly Shit! Didn't think you'd have time to write this week with the beast aboard. Have enjoyed reading the blog for the week. I'm glad the Kracken was slayed! I'm glad that you're enjoying yourselves. Looking forward to the first time out of the slip!
